Star - Delta (Wye) conversion of resistances.

This is something that is not taught in many coaching classes. It is enough to know the formulas or equations required to perform these conversions. Will help a lot in simplifying difficult circuits in Current electricity.

Featured Website - www.testhorizon.com

Hello blog readers,
Today I am going to share with you a website dedicated to IIT-JEE testing which has helped me a lot during my own JEE preparations. This site can be accessed free of cost by anyone who wishes to compare himself with others. It is recommended that users give the Online Test there instead of downloading the test as the Online test is timed and you will be able to compare your performance with others. The Site has mainly Chemistry tests although Physics and Mathematics tests are also available.
Mr. P. Joy is a renowned figure of the Chemistry World working at Kota, He has researched and developed a system for the welfare of the student’s community in the form of a website called www.testhorizon.com. The above website is a pure and concentrated distillate of his vast experience, exposure and interaction with thousands of students.

According to him, for competitive exams a student should have a different mindset than that needed for a normal school exam. The difference is to first know his own strength and weakness in comparison to others with whom he is competing. After that his focused hard work on weaker areas turns him stronger over his competitors. This can be achieved by regular monitoring of his performance tested on a common platform where all other competitors are also being tested.

I hope you will find this website useful.

PS: Now I remember the 900 Inorganic Chemistry questions were also taken from this site.

Trends in JEE Counselling.

I have studied the closing ranks of various programs over the last five years (JEE-2003 through JEE-2007), and noticed some subtle changes in preferences. From one year to the other, there are very little changes as most candidates use the last year's closing ranks as the sole guide to fill up the choice sheets every year. But those few who are courageous enough to do things differently make an impact over a longer period of time. Therefore, I mention the changes from 2006 to 2007, as well as changes from 2003 to 2007.

I have only compared those programs which started in 2003 or earlier. Also, note that some statistics would get affected by change in the number of seats, starting of new programs, and the success ratio of each zone in different years. But still, I believe that the information given below may be of interest to many.

If we just compare the closing ranks of 2006 and 2007, the program that shows biggest improvement is the MSc (Physics) program at IIT Kanpur (2502 from 2883). The biggest drop was in BArch program of IIT Roorkee (6196 from 5515). Architecture in IIT system is becoming less popular is evident from the fact that the other BArch program at IIT Kharagpur saw the second largest drop (5577 from 4997). In terms of percentage, the biggest gainer was the MTech program in Maths and Computing at IIT Delhi (749 from 891, only considering programs where the closing rank improved by at least 100). In terms of percentage, the biggest loser was the BTech program in Bio Science and Bio Engineering at IIT Kanpur (2599 from 2105, again only considering programs where the closing rank went down by at least 100).

Continuing with data of 2006 and 2007, in terms of discipline as a whole, the biggest gainer has been Civil Engineering. All civil engineering programs across the IIT system improved their closing ranks very significantly last year. The other programs to see improved closing ranks across the institutes included Aerospace, Maths and Computing, and surprisingly, Computer Science. I am surprised about CS, since I thought that such a large percentage of the top 200 students were opting for CS anyway that any further improvement was not possible. But there is further (though slight) increase in the demand of CS programs. This also has caused improvement in closing ranks of Maths and Computing programs. The worst hit programs are Architecture, and anything that has the word Biology in it. The latter is surprising to me since the industry fundamentals don't seem to have changed.

In terms of the Institutes, IIT Madras showed improvement in closing ranks in most of its programs. IIT Bombay continued to attract even better students than the past. On the other hand, IIT Roorkee and IT BHU saw decline in closing ranks in most of their programs. There is clear movement in favour of original five IITs, even at the cost of less favoured discipline.

Now, let me look at the long term trends. So, now I am comparing the closing ranks of 2003 and 2007. The program that shows biggest improvement is the MTech program in Maths and Computing at IIT Delhi (749 from 1305). The other extremely creditable improvement is in CSE programs of IIT Bombay. The BTech program closed at 47 in 2007, as compared to 101 in 2003. The BTech-MTech dual degree program at IIT Bombay closed at 198 in 2007, as compared to 332 in 2003. The biggest drops were in BArch programs of IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur. In case of IIT Kharagpur, it went down from 3624 to 5577, and in case of IIT Roorkee, it went down from 4365 to 6196. The other notable drop was in the BTech (Biotechnology) program of IIT Kharagpur from 1313 to 2553.

Continuing with data of 2003 and 2007, in terms of discipline as a whole, the biggest gainer has been Civil Engineering. Most civil engineering programs across the IIT system showed remarkable improvement in their closing ranks over this period. Clearly, Civil Engineering is getting back its lost glory, and all the infrastructure projects going on in the country have caused a dramatic improvement in the fortunes of Civil Engineers. The other programs to see improved closing ranks across the institutes included Aerospace, Maths and Computing, and Computer Science. Aerospace has clearly been motivated by successes of ISRO and the excitement of moon mission. The worst hit programs are Architecture, and anything that has the word Biology in it. Another discipline to see serious decline in closing ranks is Metallurgy.

In terms of the Institutes, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay showed improvement in closing ranks in most of their programs. On the other hand, IT-BHU, and ISM Dhanbad showed decline in closing ranks of all of their programs.

I do not feel like studying ...please tell me how can I concentrate?

Whenever I am faced with this expression from a student, I get into a state of confusion myself as to which way I should help him out...

(a). The psychological help: The thing that separates the two 'helps' is that this one has at least some acceptance. Almost no one likes to hear 'spiritual lectures'.

You have to know the following sequence -
Thoughts -> Words -> Actions -> Behavior -> Habit -> Personality -> 'Who you are'

So in a way, we are saying that what you have thought of, will eventually become 'who you are'. There are just some steps involved in the process that I have written down above. Hence, when you say 'I do not feel like doing something', then you are already in stage 2 of the process of becoming 'who I really am'. Which means you have already thought that 'I do not feel like it'. Meaning that 'I have actually made up my mind. And you just listen to what I have committed to myself in my mind, which is, that I do not feel like it'. Well, in this case I really cant do much to help you, can I. Nor can you yourself do anything about it. I hope you got what I am trying to say here.

I am not trying to play with words here. Just trying to help you out a little, to make you realize that your just saying something starts to put shape to what you want to become. The moment you say 'I feel tired', you begin to become tired (I mean how can you become tired when you have not moved too much of your body the whole day, and have just been thinking and solving problems). I know so many students who say they get tired by studying. How can you?? How can your muscles get tired or be out of oxygen, when all you were using was your brain?? So in reality, when you said 'I feel tired', you wanted to quit doing whatever you were doing, because now you have got 'bored' of doing that thing.

But not that you have said that 'I feel tired', you will begin to get yawns, your muscles will begin to ache a little and you might want to lie down, or even sleep. "Your body will do what you want it to do".

Has your brain or your body ever "disobeyed" you?? They just cannot. They are not programmed that way. Then how are they? Well, they will always help you and follow your instructions. ALWAYS. So you will ask, 'But even when there is exam tomorrow, I feel sleepy, so my brain is not helping me!!'. I will then tell you that you yourself have told your brain to feel sleepy. It is you who thinks!! Its not your brain that thinks. Your brain is what you use to think. Let me explain... does your hand move on its own? Or do you make it move? In the same, how can your brain do anything on its own. It looks like its functioning on its own, but in reality it is you who is asking it to do this, or that.

'So what do we do if we cannot really control our brain like we can control our hands and legs? What if we just keep thinking compulsively. Thoughts just come in and we do not have a way to close the door?' ... Try N.L.P. (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). Read about it in the book 'Unlimited Power' by Anthony Robbins.

This is one of the things that I do... I visualize situations in my head. Suppose that I have a big headache. I will create an image in my head of all the bad, red, hot, angry, negative things in my head and collect them all in a box. I then start shrinking the box in size, and imagine complete peace and blackness outside the box as it shrinks. The peace increases in size and the box reduces in size progressively, till it disappears. I keep doing this again and again for 5 minutes. And the headache goes away. This simple technique actually works every time in all situations. So you could be in a situation where you are feeling lazy, and all you have to do is close your eyes and imagine a situation in which you have been selected in IIT. You have secured a rank of 340 and have just gone for counseling in IIT-Delhi. And you have been awarded the stream of your choice, 'Computer Engineering'. And you are so happy and enthusiastic with joy that you have never been in life... Just imagining this situation will at least get you up from your bed and running for a while. The next time you feel lazy, imagine a similar situation, but cook up a different future story, otherwise you will start feeling bored of the same old story.

(b). The spiritual help: This is the mother of all solutions to problems in life. Here I just tell students to 'Stop thinking' altogether. The very fact that the mind is the one which gives pain in your life, that makes you restless, gives anxiety in your life, makes you very happy at one time and extremely sad at some other time.

We are taught a lot of things in our school, college, work place and home. But we have never been told about the mind. What it is and how we can use it to our advantage, and when it becomes a evil. I will try to explain as clearly as I can. (Many have tried to explain this same thing and died painful deaths trying to help compulsive thinkers)

The brain has connections to the rest of the body through the spinal chord. Every part of your body is connected to your brain. So you cannot afford to mess around with your brain, can you?? If the wrong signals are sent, you do not know where those signals will eventually land up, and what they might convey to that part of your body. But what does the brain produce?? Nothing but 'Thoughts'. Just like the bone marrows produces Red Blood Cells. Its just keeps producing thoughts. Thats its job. But now just wait a moment and analyze the difference between the bone marrow and your brain. Both were given to you as part of a self-driven programmed mechanism called 'save this guy... help him live'. The machinery of both was programmed in the DNA of every cell in your body. So thats what they keep doing.

But haven't you ever noticed that you definitely have some 'CONTROL' over your thoughts. But you do not seem to have any control whatsoever on your bone marrow. That control is the 'YOU'. You are not your hands, legs, brain, body. The 'YOU' is that control 'sometimes' exercised. This control sometimes even appears in the form of 'ATTENTION' while reading a book, watching television, listening to someone speak. It can even be the 'CONCENTRATION' thats needed often while studying. You are simply this attention, this control, this knowing, this observer. Once you have got this, then only you will understand the next para.

Now that you have got your 'ATTENTION', whenever you have a thought like 'I do not feel like', or "I feel sleepy', or 'I am a loser', or 'I cannot...', then just start to observe your thoughts. Simply observe without any prejudice or judgment. JUST WATCH your thoughts... if you do this the right way, your thoughts will not survive your attention. They will die/vanish.

This advice has been given by Mr. Pravin Tyagi. He graduated from IIT Delhi and currently runs IITians PACE, a premier institute for IIT-JEE preparation.

How Can IIT Make Your Life Disciplined???

What is it that makes 3 letter word, a matter of life & death. When a student is just having the time of his life, beginning to enjoy the last 3 years of school, at the same time he is burdened with the thoughts of being an IITian. Sometimes, the thoughts come from within and mostly from the pressure of his family.

Does a 16 year old child give up everything & devote himself only to become an IITian?? I see a boy named Sam with a pair of thick glasses who keeps himself locked in a room and is seen out is when he is hungry. I get excited each time the door bell rings or the phone trings. But this boy runs back to the room & prays to God, “Please not my friends again”, he is scared to go out & play. He believes a football or for that matter any game will act as a force, that is bound to distract, from achieving his goal. I felt really sad for him, he needed some change, he was not like others. I thought he is little abnormal. How a simple game or simple outing can deviate a person’s thought. I could never imagine a person giving up everything for a goal. Later, that evening I discussed this matter with an experienced person, he evaluated everything, then expressed his thoughts, and said. It is good to have a goal, a vision. Until & unless, you don’t have a goal in life the purpose of life fails. The boy is quiet clever to having set a goal at an early age. This 5 minutes conversation changed my way of perceiving things, earlier I use to make fun of little kids, who use to say I want to fly a plane, & would run away with a paper plane or a kid with a screw-diver & claim themselves as super engineers, but with the change in my perception, I realized, if you really wish for something, it is bound to fall under your umbrella, Thinking of being an IITian is not impossible or tough. A single thought of becoming big, introduces you to a life which has a goal, a purpose to live for. Now, when I look at Sam.
I truly appreciate his efforts. The best part about IIT or any competitive exam is, it teaches discipline, even if you don’t get through it, the time of preparation, is whole lot of learning experience. Do not just value the end result, work hard, stay focused as nothing stands in front of a willing heart & strong determination.

Board should not be neglected !

He topped IIT-JEE, flunked Class XII!

A couple of years back I anchored a talk show on television — on the concerns and issues of young people. On one of the shows we featured a student who was amongst the toppers of IIT-JEE. But ironically he failed to pass his CBSE Class XII board exam.

It was shocking! It was sad!

During our discussion he pointed out that he had taken the boards for granted and had assumed that if he studied hard enough for the IIT-JEE then Class XII papers would be a cakewalk.

It proved to be an expensive assumption for him BUT he is not alone in his confusion. This is one dilemma faced by lakhs of students in India. Some even decided to drop a year to prepare for entrance exams and the college of their choice. But we can debate the value of this another day.

Top question for NOW: How do you effectively balance study time between board exams and entrance exams?

1. Realise that they are both different types of exams even though the course might seem similar at first glance. The boards in many ways test your ability to memorise and various entrance exams on the other hand test the depth and extent of your knowledge. Don’t take for granted that by studying for entrance exams you will automatically cover the course for your board exams!

2. Now that we have established that both sets of exams need different skills and obviously different study techniques, the next big thing is the TIME factor! Plan your day and set aside time for both sets of courses. You can always give more time to the areas you are not so confident about. Time management is really the key to achieving success not just in exams but in life as well!

3. Believe me when I say that you can have sufficient time to study as well as chill if you plan well and DON’T waste your time! Most of us fritter away precious time — sometimes by neither studying nor relaxing…and mostly by spending unproductive time on the net! So, quit Facebook or surfing the net aimlessly for hours. Instead, put aside a limited time for the internet…and stick to it!!

4. Some other things that you can try are studying the same topic for boards and following it with a similar one for your entrance exam; it helps to reinforce your learning.

5. Follow board exam trends; it helps you to fine-tune your learning. Top things to do: Take mock papers, solved board exam papers, quick MCQ tests.

Hope your exams are going well :)…till next time.

J stands for IIT Japiur
K stands for IIT Kanpur
M stands for IIT Madras
N stands for IIT Gandhinagar
P stands for IIT Patna
R stands for IIT Roorkee
S stands for ISM-Dhanbad
V stands for IT-BHU
U stands for IIT Punjab
W stands for IIT Guwahati.

The meaning of the number given beside the alphabet is made clear in the next step.
Step II

Download the JEE-09 brochure
The Brochure contains a complete list of the various courses offered by the IIT's. The number in the above list beside the alphabet stands for the course offered. To know the course offered for a particular number say 43, count the 43rd Course that appears on the brochure. Thus something like U10 stands for Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Punjab.

Step III
See the closing rank of all the courses and select those for which your AIR is better than the previous year's Closing Rank. Write down the name of the courses on a piece of Paper after comparing the code with the Brochure.

Thus after finishing, you will have a list of all the Courses you stand a good chance of getting in all the IIT's , IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad.
This list is also helpful for those who are going to attempt JEE in the future and want to know what rank they must get for a particular stream in a particular IIT eg: Electrical Engg in IIT Bombay.

Dual Degree in BITS

This post is meant for all the aspirants who’d like to know more about the MSc. Courses at BITS Pilani(Pilani , Goa , Hyderabad Campuses) and the Dual Degree Scheme .

Q.1)What are these MSc. Courses?

A.1)MSc. Courses are Science-based courses , similar to that offerred in other Institutions.

In BITS they are of 2 types :

1)MSc.(Hons) in P , C , M ,Eco ,Bio
2)MSc.(Tech) in Information Systems , Finance , Gen. Stu , Engg Tech

Q.2)What is this Dual Degree Scheme?

A.2) All MSc. (Hons) (and not Tech) will get an assured BE Degree , alloted to them at the end of the 1st year , based on their CGPA for 1st year.

Q.3)Is it tough to get a good dual?

A.3) Not at all.For a CS or EEE , you need an above average CGPA , while Mech./Chem/Civil can be got at lower CGPAs too.But you will get some BE Dual assured .

Q.4)So what Degrees do I pass out with?

A.4)You get a BE and an Integrated Msc and you spend 5 years.Integ MSc. basically is BSc + MSc combined ,and it can be done by a 12th pass student.Time duration for it is 4 yrs(without a Dual).

Q.5)So , you basically waste another year?

A.5)Thats a bad way of saying it.

You get another degree from BITS , and you get 2 Practice Schools(i.e. 1 year). So basically you spend that extra year working. This is imp for PS2 Placements(Check my Practice School Post http://www.bits360.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1232 )

And that MSc. does help when applying abroad.

Q.6)Then why are the cutoffs low?

A.6)Because most people are uninformed and don’t have a clue about the Dual Degree Scheme. But then again , no other insti in India offers this , so such flexibilities are rare in India.

I think aspirants and their advisors(parents , friends etc.) are to be blamed for this.THERE IS NO “SHAME” INVOLVED IN TAKING AN MSc. AND A B.E. DUAL .THOSE WHO THINK THIS WAY ARE FOOLS.

Q.7)Do you get separate Degrees?

A.7)Yes , they are absolutely separate.

Q.8)What other such schemes are there at BITS?

A.8)Based on your 1st Year CGPA ,

1)Vertical Transfers:If you are in the Top 30 students in any of the Campuses , you can leave your old course(MSc. or BE) and take a new course(MSc. or BE).Time taken = 4 years

2)BE + BE: Offerred to only Top 10 students in each campus.Pref choices incl. Mech + EnI , CS + EEE.Time = 5yrs , 2PS2s

3)MSc. + MSc.:Offerred at lower CGPAs.Very rare.Preferred incl. MSc.Phy + MSc.Maths(5yrs)

4)MSc.(Tech) + BE Dual :rare , offerred to only very high CGPA people.(5yrs)

Based on BITSAT Marks and vacancies

1)Campus Transfers:Very rare , not advisable to join a campus thinking you can get out later.Basically it happens at the end of 1st sem.Your BITSAT marks only matter. Along with 2nd sem admission ppl , all BITSAT Marks are arranged in descending order and seats(based on vacancies , usually in Chemical and Bio Sci , Pharma) are alloted.

Q.9)Isn’t this tough?

A.9) NOT AT ALL.

Remember that for 1st year ALL students in BITS do exactly the same courses , so getting a Dual through MSc. Chem is same as for MSc. Phy .

2nd year , most courses are the same .

3rd year , BE students will do their Core Courses for their BE Degree.MSc ppl will do for their MSc.

4th yr , BE Students will go for PS2(1 sem) and will do a few extra courses in the other sem(Very light sem).MSc. ppl will do their Dual Degree Core Courses.

5th yr BE students will have passed out.MSc. students will now go for PS2 for 2 sems.

Q.10)Which MSc + BE Combos are the best?(Like MSc. Phy + EEE , MSc Chem + Chemical ... )

A.10) NONE OF THEM!

Choose your MSc. depending on the subject you like the most and/or you are good at.In my Myths abt Engg post I have discussed why.

And there is a trend for ppl to choose MSc. Phy much above Msc. Bio Sci.Frankly this is silly.MSc. Bio Sci is basically Bio Engg and is quite interesting. Many students from other MScs tried for an MSc Bio(at the end of their 1st yr) , out of which very few were given. So , don’t fall into the trap of choosing Phy because it sounds glamourous. In reality it is very tough and only those genuinely excellent at it will enjoy it.

And don’t bother about Placements.Your BE degree will ensure this.Choose your MSc. out of ineterest.MSc. will help you greatly in applying abroad(assuming you have actually done something worthwhile in your MSc. field).

Q.11)How is MSc. at BITS differrent from that in the IITs?

A.11)

-No Dual Degree is given in the IITs
-In IITs it is for 5 years
